Episode 33: The Wonderful War

"THE WONDERFUL WAR"

The Saint wages war against a Middle East oil state - with the aid of
tape-recorders, loudspeakers, fireworks, a handful of friends and a pretty
girl.

Greed, murder and intrigue follow in the wake of the discovery of oil in the
Middle East country of Sayeda. The British company making the discovery is
run by John McAndrew (JACK LAMBERT) and Harry Shannet (ALFRED BURKE). Lust
for power and riches drives Shannet into plotting with the treacherous prime
minister, Aziz (ALEC MANGO). The Imam (FERDY MAYNE), ruler of the country,
is killed, and so is John McAndrew. The Imam's son Karim (LOUIS RAYNOR)
manages to escape. Now, as the youthful ruler of the state, he is a threat
to Aziz and Shannet, and he flees for his life.

Mike Kelly (NOEL PURCELL), a big, burly Irishman employed by the
McAndrew-Shannet company, helps the young Karim to escape across the border
into Kuwait, and it is here that Simon Templar, the Saint (ROGER MOORE),
meets up with them, accompanied by the murdered McAndrew's daughter, Lilla
(SUZANNA LEIGH). The Saint's friendship with Lilla has led to his offer to
investigate her father's death.

The Saint thwarts further attempts on Karim's life, and then puts into
operation an audacious plan to foil Aziz and Shannet. The first thing he has
to do is to delay their granting an oil concession to any of the companies
lining up with offers. Posing as a wealthy oil tycoon, he turns up in
Sayeda, and makes an offer far in excess of any others. He then declares war
on the new regime with a loyalist army that consists of tape-recorders,
loudspeakers, fireworks and dynamite. Flashes are accompanied by the roar of
guns and the shouts of the soldiers - proided by the tape-recordings. The
impression is given that a large-scale attack is being launched, and the
Saint adds to it all by disguising himself as an Arab and inciting the
crowds to rally round their rightful ruler.

Nevertheless, before Aziz and Shannet are beaten, both the Saint and the
attractive Lilla come very close to disaster.....
