The Saint on TV
Episode 22: The Elusive Ellshaw
"THE ELUSIVE ELLSHAW"
What is the connection between the strange behaviour and killing of a
cashier separated from her husband and the attempted murder of her former
employer, a wealthy shipping magnate? The Saint is unexpectedly involved.
When Simon Templar, The Saint, (ROGER MOORE), is invited by the lovely Anne
Ripwell (ANGELA BROWNE) to visit her father's country home for a shooting
party, the first indication that he is heading into something unusual is
when Anne takes him to a gunshop to buy a gun. She chooses the shop because
she knows the cashier, Mrs. Ellshaw (ELLEN McINTOSH), who used to be her
father's secretary.
Wile they are there, Mrs. Ellshaw suddenly rushes from the shop, thinking
she has seen her husband, who is supposed to be in Canada. She follows him
to an old house which is empty except for some orange crates and a camp cot.
Arthur Ellshaw (PHILIP LATHAM) pleads with her not to tell anyone that she
has seen him, and asks her to go away. Worried and puzzled, she appeals to
the Saint for help, but when he and Anne go to the house they find it
completely empty, with no signs of anyone having been there.
The Saint believes, Mrs. Ellshaw to be a neurotic woman who has been
imagining things....until, returning to see her, he finds her dead. She has
been murdered.
Soon afterwards, he learns that an attempt has been made on the life of
Anne's father, Sir John Ripwell (RICHARD VERNON), but it seems inconceivable
that the two events have anything in common.
The mystery increases when he and Anne arrive at her father's home. Sir John
is out shooting. With him are his partner, Hugo Meyer (WALTER BROWN), his
secretary Martin Irelock (ANTHONY BATE) and his son, Anne's brother, Kenneth
(PHILIP BOND). Very soon after they have arrived, the Saint and Anne are
told that Sir John has been accidentally shot. Luckily, the injury is not
serious but Sir John has to remain in bed. It is not clear which member of
the party shot him, but evidence points to Kenneth.
The atmosphere in the house is tense. Kenneth is obviously under Martin
Irelock's thumb, and Hugo is aggressively disagreeable, and clearly dislikes
Irelock. In the event of Sir John's death, the money would go to Kenneth and
Anne, and Hugo would benefit by taking over the firm. The only one who
wouldn't benefit is Martin Irelock. When Kenneth disappears and the Saint
discovers he owns the property where Arthur Ellshaw had been hiding, events
take a sensational turn........
