Episode 19: Starring The Saint

"STARRING THE SAINT"

The Saint's chance to become a film star is brought to an abrupt end when
the producer is murdered. But who killed him?

It is news to Simon Templar, the Saint (ROGER MOORE), when he reads a
newspaper report that: "Byron Ufferlitz, the prominent film producer, plans
a picture based on the true life story of the famous Simon Templar".

But is anger simmers down when Ufferlitz (RONALD RADD) comes forward with an
offer of a thousand pounds a week plus a cut of the profits. Much as he
dislikes the urbane producer, he accepts. Not many other people like
Ufferlitz either, particularly Orland Flane (ALEXANDER DAVION) who has been
dropped in favour of the Saint as the star of the next production.

Part of the set-up, the Saint discovers, is a publicity stunt linking his
name with the glamorous April Quest (JACKIE COLLINS). She's gorgeous, even
if she is cynical, and it's not at all hard for the Saint to take her out so
that they can be seen and photographed together. The evening is interrupted,
however, by a note to the Saint, signed by Byron Ufferlitz, asking him to go
to his house at once.

Promising to rejoin April within an hour, the Saint goes - and finds
Ufferlitz dead. His secretary, Peggy Warden (MONICA STEVENSON), is in the
room, petrified with fear. She has come back to collect her dictation book
from her boss, and discovered her body.

One thing seems clear. The note the Saint received was not in the dead man's
writing. Someone, therefore is attempting to frame the Saint, even to the
extent of tipping off the police.

The Saint's career as a film star is over before it has started. He is
suspected of murder into the bargain. But who really did it? In his efforts
to clear up the mystery, the Saint comes across the name of Trilby Andrews.
Whoever she is, or was, has an important bearing on the case. It is a name
linked with Ufferlitz and also with a director, Jack Groom (ALFRED BURKE),
who has more than one reason for hating the dead man - and, the Saint
discovers, was once engaged to Trilby Andrews, a young starlet, before
Ufferlitz took her away from him and she later committed suicide.

But there are others who are glad that Ufferlitz is dead, and the finger of
suspicion points more and more strongly towards the ousted star, Orland
Flane, who is, in fact, arrested by the police. But the Saint has other
ideas.............
