The Saint on TV
Episode 18: The Fellow Traveller
"THE FELLOW TRAVELLER"
The Saint encounters drama in a bus shelter. It involves sudden death,
sabotage and a very beautiful girl.
A telephone call sends Simon Templar, the Saint (ROGER MOORE), to a
rendezvous at a country bus shelter. The call is from an electronics
engineer named Matson (BRIAN OULTON).
Mason gets as far as telling the Saint that he is scared, and that gambling
has led him into selling vital secrets, when a truck approaches, shots ring
out, and he slumps forward at the Saint's feet. His last words before he
dies are: "Get....Maris....Go....Blue Goose...Maris....and....Magda
Vamoff....."
Despite the warnings of Detective Superintendent Kinglake (GLYN OWEN) not to
interfere in the case, the Saint goes ahead with his own enquiries. Things
happen -fast. An unsuccessful attempt is made on the Saint's life, and one
of the men concerned is Hans Blatt (MICHAEL PEAKE). The Saint later meets
him face to face when he tracks down the Blue Goose Club. Blatt is a
croupier.
The Saint takes a very close look at everyone connected with the club,
including Joe, the bartender (MICHAEL BATES) and, in particular, the
hostess, Magda Vamoff (DAWN ADAMS). Magda really is something. The Saint's
interest in the case takes on quite a new angle, but he can't make out just
how deeply she is involved. She's Hungarian, as intelligent as she is
beautiful, but he doesn't know how much she tells him is the truth,
especially when she denies knowing the identity of the mysterious Maris. But
this doesn't stop a very enjoyable relationship developing between them.
An audacious advertisement on his part requests any friend - or enemy of a
man named Maris to contact him at his hotel, and it brings a reply from an
ex-crook named Nick Vashetti (NEIL McCALLUM), who admits that he has been
acting as intermediary for the spy ring, taking packages and messages from
place to place. He has cunningly kept a list of all the names and addresses
of the contacts, which he offers to sell to the Saint for £300 and the
promise that he will be given time to get out of England. But he is killed
before he can hand over the book, which cannot be found. Superintendent
Kinglake takes advantage of the opportunity to arrest the Saint on a charge
of murder, but a call to the War Office provides an electrifying change in
Kinglake's attitude. From then onwards the two men work together towards a
danger-packed climax at the Blue Goose Club where the truth about the
glamorous Magda emerges and the identity of "Maris" is revealed.
