The Saint on TV
Episode 11: The Man Who Was Lucky
"THE MAN WHO WAS LUCKY"
The Saint receives a telephone call from a bookmaker who is being threatened
by a "protection" gang - and, with the help of two courageous girls, deals
with the matter in his own way.
"My partner and me - we're in trouble. We're supposed to pay protection to a
man named Luckner - Lucky Joe Luckner".
This is the message Simon Templar, the Saint (ROGER MOORE) receives from a
bookmaker friend named Marty O'Connor (HARRY TOWB). He and his partner,
Baily, are turf accountants in London. But before the Saint can offer any
assistance, Bailey is dead, killed by Lucky (EDDIE BYRNE).
Marty is persuaded by his girl-friend, Cora (DELPHI LAWRENCE) to go into
hiding with her because it may be his turn next. She knows Lucky. She works
for him in his club, and Lucky wants her to be his girl.
The Saint decides to pay a visit to the club, and Cora's friend Jane (VERA
DAY) tells him that Cora has been in touch with her, asking to borrow money
so that she and Marty can get out of the country and away from Lucky. She
takes him to Cora, and the Saint outlines his plan - a plan that is going to
need a lot of courage on the part of both girls. It means Cora telephoning
Lucky to say she is going to marry Marty.
The next stop is for the Saint to see Lucky and tell him he knows where
Marty is hiding. He'll tell him where for five thousand pounds. Lucky
eventually agrees and the Saint arranges an rendezvous for that evening.
It's a calculated gamble on the Saint's part, and one of the most ingenious
schemes he has ever worked out. Thanks to the assistance of the two girls,
justice catches up with Lucky - but not until he has been trapped into
providing the money that will enable Marty and Cora to set out on a new
life!
