The Saint on TV
Episode 2: The Latin Touch
"THE LATIN TOUCH"
The Saint goes to the help of a lovely American girl who is being
over-charged by a taxi-driver in Rome - and immediately becomes involved in
a kidnapping case, with dramatic developments.
The girl is Susan Inverest (SUZAN FARMER), daughter of an American senator
and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Hudson Inverest (ALEXANDER KNOX and DORIS NOLAN).
Simon Templar, the Saint (ROGER MOORE), sees Susan arguing with an Italian
taxi-driver, Marco (WARREN MITCHELL), and goes to her aid. The fare is
adjusted, Marco is told to wait, and the Saint takes Susan around the
Collosseum. But before the tour is over, the Saint is coshed, Susan is
grabbed, and an expertly planned kidnapping is carried out.
The Saint returns to consciousness in jail, Marco, arrested on a charge of
trying to rob him, is there as well. The Saint, interviewed by Inspector
Buono (PETER ILLING), is held on a charge of disturbing the peace but is
warned that the charge may be changed to being an accessory to kidnapping.
Governor Inverest, who is in Rome as chairman of the Italian-American Trade
Commission, is told of the kidnapping, and he obtains the release of the
Saint and Marco. Soon afterwards, a telephome call is received from a
terrified Susan. She is being held by a former gangster named Tony Unciello
(BILL NAGY), who demands to meet Inverest at a lonely rendezvous. The Saint
goes with him as his chauffeur, and Marco is told to follow.
Unciello's ransom terms have nothing to do with money. Before he left
America, Inverest signed a death warrant on a ruthless killer named Mick
Keston, and Keston is Tony Unciello's brother. He goes to the chair in
forty-eight hours. Only Inverest can order a reprieve and Unciello threatens
that, unless he does so, Susan will meet her death at the same time that
Keston dies.
Back at the Embassy, the Saint and the Inverests wait for Marco to return,
but when he does so, he reports failure. He has lost track of Unciello, and
the Saint starts on a desperate race against time to find the ex-gangster.
Unciello's mother (MARIE BURKE) is unable to help: she has disowned her
sons. But she mentions a Maria Emmanuelli (CARROLL SIMPSON), one of Tony's
former girlfriends and now a night club singer. Maria, beautiful but scared,
won't talk. The hours tick by, the moment of execution draws nearer as
Inverest wavers between duty and love for his daughter.
A daring ruse by the Saint at last offers hope.
